‘Press For Progress’: The Mechanism marks International Women’s Day 2018

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) marked International Women’s Day today with a variety of events at its Arusha branch. Reflecting on this year’s theme ‘Press for Progress’, the Mechanism joined the global celebration of women’s rights, equality and justice, focusing on the criminal prosecution of the crimes of sexual and gender-based violence against women in armed conflicts.

The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) received a visit from a delegation from the Economic Community of West African (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice at the premises of the Mechanism’s Arusha branch on Wednesday, 28 February 2018. The high-level delegation of Judges and senior officials was led by the President of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, the Honourable Justice Jérôme Traoré.

The Appeals Chamber of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, composed of Judge Theodor Meron, presiding, Judge Lee G. Muthoga, Judge Florence Rita Arrey, Judge Ben Emmerson, and Judge Ivo Nelson de Caires Batista Rosa heard today oral arguments in the appeal filed by the Prosecution against the judgement of acquittal in the case of Mr. Vojislav Šešelj, rendered on 31 March 2016 by Trial Chamber III of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

Prosecutor Serge Brammertz of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) spoke today at the briefing entitled “The International Tribunal and Beyond: Pursuing Justice for Atrocities in the Western Balkans” organized by the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission) and the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission (TLHRC).
