The Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), Mr. Serge Brammertz, concluded an official visit to Kigali, Rwanda from 05 to 09 May 2025, as part of the continuing cooperation between the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) and Rwandan authorities regarding the investigation and prosecution of individuals alleged to have participated in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, today issued the following statement in honour of International Women’s Day 2025:

Today, the Appeals Chamber composed of Judge Graciela Gatti Santana (Uruguay), presiding, Judge Jean-Claude Antonetti (France), Judge Burton Hall (The Bahamas), Judge Aminatta Lois Runeni N'gum (Gambia), and Judge Seon Ki Park (South Korea) orally pronounced its judgement on review in the case of Prosecutor v. Gérard Ntakirutimana, Case No. MICT-12-17-R.

Mr. Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, has concluded an official visit to Kigali, Rwanda from 4 to 9 November 2024, as part of preparations for his regular biannual report to the United Nations Security Council.

The Prosecutor had high-level meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe, the Secretary-General of the National Intelligence and Security Service, Mr. Aimable Havugiyaremye, and the Prosecutor General, Angélique Habyarimana.

The inaugural mission of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), in relation to monitoring the proceedings of the Šešelj et al. case, concluded today in Belgrade, Serbia. This multi-day mission, conducted by the Officer-in-Charge of the Mechanism Registry's Hague Branch, Mr. Samuel Algozin, and the appointed Monitor, Mr. Brent Hicks, focused on introducing the Monitor, in preparation for the start of the proceedings of the referred case.

The accreditation procedure is now open for attendance at the Review Hearing in the case of Prosecutor v. Gérard Ntakirutimana before the Appeals Chamber of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism). The Review Hearing will be held at the Arusha branch of the Mechanism from Monday, 18 November 2024 until Friday, 22 November 2024, subject to adjustments as appropriate.

Today, Mr. Abubacarr Tambadou, Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), appointed Mr. Brent Hicks as the Monitor in the contempt case against Mr. Vojislav Šešelj, Mr. Miljan Damjanović, Mr. Miroljub Ignjatović, Ms. Ljiljana Mihajlović, and Mr. Ognjen Mihajlović (Šešelj et al. case).

Mr. Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), has concluded a concerted series of missions to the Western Balkans, including visits to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia.

In recent weeks, Mr. Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, has undertaken official visits to Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and now Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to hold high-level meetings concerning regional cooperation in war crimes matters.

Mr. Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), attended the annual conference of war crimes prosecutors from the Western Balkans region, held this year in Podgorica, Montenegro on 17 and 18 September.
