On Thursday, 7 November 2019, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) organised a graduation ceremony for 30 newly recruited Security Officers. During this official ceremony, the Registrar, Mr. Olufemi Elias welcomed and congratulated the new Security Officers. Speaking at the event, the Registrar reiterated the importance he, under the delegated authority from the United Nations Secretary General, attaches to gender parity and proudly announced that the Mechanism has achieved gender parity within the Security and Safety Section.

Mechanism Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will visit Belgrade on 4 and 5 November, as part of preparations for his regular biannual report to the UN Security Council (UNSC).

The Inter-University Video Lecture Programme (Programme) of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) launched yesterday with the first lecture delivered in The Hague by the Mechanism’s President, Judge Carmel Agius, on the topic of “ICTY – Creation and Jurisdiction”.

Mechanism Chief Prosecutor, Serge Brammertz today met with the representatives of the Operative Working Group on Missing Persons in Sarajevo, as part of his official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Among the topics discussed at the meeting were the challenges in finding missing persons from the war, exchange of information between the respective institutions that form the Operative Group and the support by the Mechanism’s Office of the Prosecutor in this process.

Yesterday, President Carmel Agius presented the seventh Annual Report of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) to the United Nations General Assembly (Assembly). This was President Agius’ first address to the Assembly since he assumed office in January 2019.

The initial appearance of Mr. Augustin Ngirabatware with regard to allegations of contempt is scheduled for Thursday, 17 October 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Courtroom of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, before Judge Vagn Joensen, the Single Judge assigned to the matter.
