The President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), Judge Theodor Meron, today addressed the United Nations Security Council to present the latest six-month progress report on the work of the Mechanism.

The President noted that, in the reporting period, the Mechanism assumed responsibility for the retrial in the case of Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović, as well as for appeal proceedings in the cases of Radovan Karadžić and Vojislav Šešelj.

Book Launch: Prosecuting Conflict-Related Sexual Violence at the ICTY

On Tuesday, 31 May, The Hague Institute for Global Justice and the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), with support from the Embassies of Australia, Sweden and the United Kingdom, hosted the inaugural book launch for “Prosecuting Conflict-Related Sexual Violence at the ICTY”. The volume is edited by Prosecutor Serge Brammertz and Deputy to the Prosecutor Michelle Jarvis and published by Oxford University Press.

The Principals of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) today held a briefing attended by approximately 100 members of The Hague and Brussels diplomatic community. President Theodor Meron, Prosecutor Serge Brammertz and Registrar John Hocking outlined the Mechanism’s role and functions and briefed representatives on recent activities.

On 13 May 2016, the United Nations and the Republic of Mali concluded an Agreement on the enforcement of sentences pronounced by either the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) or the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT).

The Agreement was signed in Bamako, Mali, by Mr. John Hocking, Registrar of the MICT, on behalf of the United Nations and by H.E. Justice Sanogo Aminata Mallé, Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Keeper of the Seals, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Mali.

Prosecutor Serge Brammertz on mission to Sarajevo

Mr. Serge Brammertz, Prosecutor of the ICTY and MICT, will be in Sarajevo from 11 to 15 May 2016, as part of preparations for his regular biyearly reports to the UN Security Council (UNSC).

The Prosecutor will meet with members of the BiH Presidency, BiH Minister of Justice Josip Grubeša, Head of War Crimes Department in the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH Gordana Tadić and President of the BiH Court Meddžida Kreso.

The Prosecutor will also meet with representatives of victims’ organizations and members of the diplomatic community.

The Prosecutor of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), Mr Serge Brammertz, made his first official visit to the United Republic of Tanzania and Rwanda.

During his mission to Tanzania between 11 and 13 April 2016, the Prosecutor met with Government officials in Dar Es Salam, including Her Excellency the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Chief Secretary in the President’s Office, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is with great sadness that the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) learned of the premature passing of John R.W.D. Jones, a former staff member and defence counsel on five cases before the ICTY - the cases of Mehmed Alagić, Rasim Delić, Momčilo Krajišnik, Naser Orić, and Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markač.

The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) joins in the worldwide commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, during which Hutu and others who opposed the genocide were also killed.
 
The MICT participated this afternoon in a memorial service at the East African Community (EAC) Headquarters, organized by the Rwandan community in Arusha, Tanzania. The event featured a wreath laying and a candle lighting ceremony, as well as remarks under the theme “Fighting Genocide Ideology”.
