The Arusha branch of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (“MICT” or “Mechanism”) today marked International Women’s Day with the theme “I Am Change”, reflecting the global theme for International Women’s Day, “Be Bold for Change”.

The Registrar of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism” or “MICT”) Olufemi Elias on Thursday, 2 March 2017, concluded an official mission to East and West Africa. As part of his visit, Mr. Elias met with officials from the United Republic of Tanzania (“Tanzania”), the Republic of Rwanda (“Rwanda”), the Republic of Senegal (“Senegal”), and the Republic of Ghana (“Ghana”).

The President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (“MICT” or “Mechanism”), Judge Theodor Meron, on Friday met with a delegation from the National Human Rights Commission of the Republic of Korea (“NHRCK”), including the Chairperson of the NHRCK, Mr. Sung-ho Lee, the NHRCK’s International Cooperation Team Director, Mr. Hyoung-seok Cho, and the International Cooperation Team Deputy Director, Mr. Yun-kul Jung. The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Netherlands, H.E. Jong-hyun Choe, and the Embassy’s Counsellor, Mr. Jong-sun Kang, also took part in the meeting.

The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (“MICT” or “Mechanism”) yesterday received a senior judicial delegation from the East African Court of Justice (“EACJ”) at the Mechanism’s Arusha Branch. Representatives of the Mechanism’s President, Prosecutor and Registrar warmly welcomed the EACJ delegation, including the Honourable Justice Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, President of the Court, the Honourable Justice Liboire Nkurunziza, Vice-President of the Court, and the Honourable Justices of the Court’s Appellate Division Aaron Ringera, Edward Rutakangwa and Geoffrey W.M. Kiryabwire.

The Mechanism orders Turkey to release Judge Aydin Sefa Akay

The United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals today ordered the Government of the Republic of Turkey to cease all legal proceedings against Judge Aydin Sefa Akay and to take all necessary measures to ensure his release from detention, no later than 14 February 2017, so that he can resume his judicial functions in the case of Prosecutor v. Augustin Ngirabatware. The order is binding on Turkey under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1966 (2010), which requires that all States comply with orders issued by the Mechanism.

The President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (“MICT” and “Mechanism”), Judge Theodor Meron, today presented the latest progress report on the work of the MICT to the United Nations Security Council and urged the release of Judge Aydin Sefa Akay from detention in Turkey.

Prosecutor Serge Brammertz of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) and International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) today addressed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
 
In his address, Prosecutor Brammertz updated the UNSC on the ICTY’s final trial and appeal, the MICT’s trial and appeals, the search for the remaining eight fugitives indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the provision of assistance to national jurisdictions prosecuting war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.
