The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. António Guterres, has appointed Judge Fatimata Sanou Touré of Burkina Faso to the roster of Judges of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”), effective 12 August 2021.

On Wednesday, 28 July 2021, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) received the Hon. Mr. John Mongella, Regional Commissioner of Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, at the premises of the Mechanism’s Arusha branch. The visit was a courtesy call by the Hon. Mr. John Mongella.

The Principals of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), President Carmel Agius, Prosecutor Serge Brammertz and Registrar Abubacarr Tambadou, today issued the following statement on the occasion of International Criminal Justice Day:

“International Criminal Justice Day is an annual reminder of our shared responsibility to support international criminal justice in all its forms and fora, of our commitment to combating impunity for horrific crimes everywhere, and of our mission to bring perpetrators to justice.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) today commemorates the twenty-sixth anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. While time passes, the suffering of the victims does not and the memories of lost loved ones remain vivid.

On this day we, the Principals of the Mechanism, join those affected in remembering the horrors of the genocide in July 1995 and the agony of its aftermath. We commend the remarkable courage displayed by survivors and bereft families. We stand with them as they continue to pursue accountability and the truth.

The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) takes note of today’s judgment in the Stanišić and Simatović case. The OTP is satisfied that the Trial Chamber accepted that the Prosecution presented evidence proving beyond reasonable doubt Stanišić’s and Simatović’s responsibility for some crimes charged. The OTP will carefully review the written judgment, when available, with respect to the charges that the Trial Chamber did not find proven beyond reasonable doubt, and decide whether there are grounds to appeal.

The Trial Chamber of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), composed of Judges Burton Hall (The Bahamas), presiding, Joseph Masanche (Tanzania), and Seon Ki Park (Republic of Korea), today delivered its judgement in the case of Prosecutor v. Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović.

The accreditation procedure for those wishing to attend the pronouncement of the Trial Judgement in the case of Prosecutor v. Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović by the Trial Chamber of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) is now closed. The Trial Judgement is scheduled for Wednesday, 30 June 2021 at 3.00 p.m. CEST in the Courtroom of the Mechanism's Hague branch.

Today, Judge Vagn Joensen (Denmark) pronounced his Judgement in the case of Prosecutor v. Anselme Nzabonimpa et al. (MICT-18-116-T), convicting Mr. Augustin Ngirabatware, Mr. Anselme Nzabonimpa, Mr. Jean de Dieu Ndagijimana, and Ms. Marie Rose Fatuma of contempt for witness interference. The Single Judge also convicted Mr. Ngirabatware for contempt on the basis of violating court orders while entering a verdict of not guilty for a co-Accused, Mr. Dick Prudence Munyeshuli, on a single contempt charge for violations of court orders. Anselme Nzabonimpa, Jean de Dieu Ndagijimana, Marie Rose Fatuma, Dick Prudence Munyeshuli, and Augustin Ngirabatware, for Friday, 25 June 2021 at 12:00 EAT/ 11:00 CEST in the Courtroom of the Mechanism’s Arusha branch.
