Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) will have an official visit to Harare, Zimbabwe, from 2 to 4 November 2021, as part of preparations for his regular biannual report to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), Judge Carmel Agius, met today with the President of the Seventy-Sixth Session of the United Nations General Assembly, His Excellency Ambassador Abdulla Shahid of the Republic of Maldives, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Mechanism Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will visit Belgrade from 19 to 21 September 2021 to participate in the Regional prosecutors’ conference on cooperation in war crimes processing, organized by the Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office and supported by the UNDP and UK government.
On Wednesday, 28 July 2021, the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) received the Hon. Mr. John Mongella, Regional Commissioner of Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, at the premises of the Mechanism’s Arusha branch. The visit was a courtesy call by the Hon. Mr. John Mongella.
The Principals of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), President Carmel Agius, Prosecutor Serge Brammertz and Registrar Abubacarr Tambadou, today issued the following statement on the occasion of International Criminal Justice Day:
“International Criminal Justice Day is an annual reminder of our shared responsibility to support international criminal justice in all its forms and fora, of our commitment to combating impunity for horrific crimes everywhere, and of our mission to bring perpetrators to justice.
The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) today commemorates the twenty-sixth anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide. While time passes, the suffering of the victims does not and the memories of lost loved ones remain vivid.
On this day we, the Principals of the Mechanism, join those affected in remembering the horrors of the genocide in July 1995 and the agony of its aftermath. We commend the remarkable courage displayed by survivors and bereft families. We stand with them as they continue to pursue accountability and the truth.
The Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) takes note of today’s judgment in the Stanišić and Simatović case. The OTP is satisfied that the Trial Chamber accepted that the Prosecution presented evidence proving beyond reasonable doubt Stanišić’s and Simatović’s responsibility for some crimes charged. The OTP will carefully review the written judgment, when available, with respect to the charges that the Trial Chamber did not find proven beyond reasonable doubt, and decide whether there are grounds to appeal.
