Following a suggestion of the Prosecutor of the Mechanism for the International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), on 8 May 2013, the Registrar of the MICT hosted a meeting with members of the Arusha Spouses’ Association (ASA) who briefed him on the ASA local community development projects. The meeting was an opportunity to explore ways by which the MICT might support one of its projects, through voluntary donations from staff and officials.

The Office of the Registrar of the Mechanism for the International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), Arusha Branch hosted its first capacity-building workshop with a delegation from the Kenya Witness Protection Agency (WPA), on 7 May 2013.

The purpose of the workshop, solicited by the Kenyan Government, was to share MICT’s experience and best practices in the area of victim and witness protection and support as the newly established WPA works towards preparing its draft Rules of Court and Evidence for consideration by the Judiciary in Kenya in respect of protected witnesses.

As Rwanda begins this official week of mourning, the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) joins in remembering the victims of the Rwandan Genocide.

In commemorating the Genocide, the MICT pays special tribute to those victims who willingly and courageously participated as witnesses in judicial proceedings before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).

The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) commemorated its first International Women’s Day in collaboration with the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) as a combined UN Office in Arusha, Tanzania. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day was Passing the Baton from Women to Girls.

The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) has launched the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS) and Kinyarwanda versions of its website as part of its efforts to bring its work closer to the communities of the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

President Theodor Meron today presented to the Security Council the first progress report on the work of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism or MICT) since the launch of the Mechanism’s Arusha branch on 1 July 2012. The President reported that the Mechanism was “already deeply engaged in fulfilling its mandate”, and he assured the members of the Council of his commitment to making the Mechanism “a model institution”.

In its first decision, the Appeals Chamber of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals, presided over by the President of the Mechanism, Judge Theodor Meron, upheld a decision by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to transfer the case of Phénéas Munyarugarama to the Republic of Rwanda for trial proceedings. 

The launch of the Arusha Branch of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) was marked by a ceremony held today in Arusha, Tanzania. 

Established by the Security Council of the United Nations, the Mechanism is mandated to carry out a number of essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) after the completion of their respective mandates. 

The website of the United Nations Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) is now available at www.irmct.org.

The launch of the Mechanism’s website coincides with the official launch of the MICT Arusha Branch on 2 July 2012, which will carry out the remaining functions of the ICTR, including trial and appellate proceedings, and the supervision and enforcement of sentences.  The Hague Branch of the Mechanism, which will take on functions derived from the ICTY, will commence work on 1 July 2013.

The Judges of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) recently adopted the Rules of Procedure and Evidence, to guide the work of the institution mandated with carrying out a number of essential functions of the ICTY and the ICTR after the completion of their respective mandates. Judge Theodor Meron, President of the MICT, expressed his gratitude to the Judges of the MICT for their cooperation in considering and adopting the Rules on an expedited basis.
