On 24 October 2020, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) held an online workshop for 30 high school history teachers from Serbia.

This was the eighth in a series of MIP workshops and focused on how history teachers can best include judicially established facts in educational material related to the conflicts of 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.

The MIP workshops are implemented in cooperation with the European Association of History Teachers (EUROCLIO) and associations of history teachers from the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Félicien Kabuga was transferred today from France to the custody of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) in The Hague, after having been at large for more than 22 years. His initial appearance will be held in due course before a Judge of the Trial Chamber assigned to his case.

Judge Carmel Agius, President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), today launched the second cycle of the Mechanism’s Inter-University Video Lecture Programme (Programme) by delivering a lecture on the creation and jurisdiction of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

The trial in the contempt case of Prosecutor v. Maximilien Turinabo et al. (MICT-18-116-T) before the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) will commence on Thursday, 22 October 2020 at 10 a.m. EAT and 9 a.m CEST at the Mechanism’s Arusha branch. The proceedings before Judge Vagn Joensen, the Single Judge assigned to the case, will begin with opening statements from the parties, followed by the expected presentation of evidence on Monday, 26 October 2020. Today, at the Hague branch of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), a Trial Chamber composed of Judge Burton Hall (Presiding) of the Bahamas, Judge Joseph Masanche of Tanzania, and Judge Seon Ki Park of South Korea, concluded hearing witness testimony in the trial of Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović. As the Presiding Judge said in his closing remarks, this is a milestone in particular in the context of a pandemic.

In the spirit of promoting greater collaboration and partnerships between the Arusha Branch of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) and other judicial institutions hosted in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania, as well as the local authorities in Arusha, the Registrar of the Mechanism, Mr. Abubacarr Tambadou this week paid courtesy visits on the President of the East African Court of Justice (“EACJ”), Dr. Emmanuel Ugirashebuja, and the Regional Commissioner of Arusha, Honourable Iddi Hassan Kimanta on 22 and 24 September 2020 respectively.
