MICT Prosecutor Serge Brammertz was in Nairobi, Kenya on 10 and 11 November, where he was a lead participant in a conference to establish the Great Lakes Judicial Cooperation Network.

Speaking at the Opening Session, Prosecutor Brammertz stressed that ‘he supports all initiatives making the professional life of fellow prosecutors easier’. The Prosecutor spoke about the mandate of the MICT and the need for the states’ assistance and cooperation for the successful arrest of the remaining 8 fugitives indicted by the ICTR. He also shared his experiences when, as a Belgian Prosecutor, he facilitated cooperation of the prosecutors of the European countries, which led to the creation of the European Judicial Network (EJN).

Prosecutor Brammertz concluded by reiterating his support for the Great Lakes Judicial Cooperation Network, and called upon the prosecutors from the Great Lakes countries to also make use of existing judicial networks, including those set up by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), and the opportunity to use the new MICT facility in Arusha to conduct judicial trainings.

Organized under the auspices of the UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes region, the conference is being attended by prosecutors of the Great Lakes countries, and representatives of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC), UN Development Programme (UNDP), the EJN, and others.
