Sarajevo law students visit the Mechanism for Moot Court preparation

On 11 June 2025, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) welcomed to the Mechanism's Hague premises students and professors from the University of Sarajevo Law Faculty, many of whom previously participated in the MIP's Inter-University Video Lecture Programme (Programme).

The visit focused on supporting the group's preparation for the 2025 ICC Moot Court Competition by giving participants the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have gained in previous training sessions. In a practical session with Ms. Lori Ann Wanlin, Legal Officer in the Office of the President at the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), the students delivered their oral submissions and received targeted feedback. Drawing on her experience in the courtroom and in providing legal assistance to ICTY and Mechanism Judges, Ms. Wanlin offered guidance on anticipating and responding effectively to judicial questions, addressing issues raised by the other parties, and communicating persuasively.

This in-person training was the fourth session organised for the group, following three earlier online workshops featuring legal professionals from the Mechanism's Office of the President, Office of the Prosecutor, and an experienced Defence Counsel.

The workshops expand on the Inter-University Video Lecture Programme, titled "International Law and Facts Established before the ICTY", which connects students from across the region and explores the Tribunal's work, jurisprudence, and lasting impact.

Since 2019, the Programme has engaged over 600 postgraduate students from 14 law faculties and one political science faculty in the former Yugoslavia. Beyond deepening legal knowledge, it encourages regional dialogue and cooperation among future legal professionals.

The Programme is part of the broader MIP, launched in January 2019, which aims to raise awareness and understanding of the 1990s conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, based on ICTY and Mechanism cases. The MIP is funded by the European Union.
