Judge Flavia Lattanzi of Italy, a distinguished international law expert and a former Judge of both the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), has passed. She served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) from 2003 to 2006 and at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) from 2007 to 2016. During her tenure she served on the bench in several trials, including in the cases of Prosecutor v. Tharcisse Muvunyi and Prosecutor v. Édouard Karemera and Mathieu Ngirumpatse. Subsequently, from 2007 to 2016, Judge Lattanzi served as a Judge of the ICTY, including in the trial proceedings in the cases of Prosecutor v. Vojislav Šešelj and Prosecutor v. Radovan Karadžić 

She also advised Italy during negotiations establishing the International Criminal Court and held several academic and legal positions. She is remembered for her contributions to international criminal law and her dedication to holding perpetrators of atrocities accountable.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) was established by UN Security Council Resolution 1966 (2010) to complete the remaining work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia after the completion of their respective mandates. The Mechanism has two branches, one in Arusha, Tanzania, and one in The Hague, Netherlands.
