MIP Lecture for Students of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht

On 17 September 2026, the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) held a lecture for students of the HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht at the University’s premises in Utrecht, Netherlands.

The lecture was delivered by Mr. Nemanja Stjepanović, MIP Researcher, who introduced the students to the legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the work of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), highlighting the role of international criminal justice in establishing facts about crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s and the relevance of these findings to reconciliation processes in the Western Balkans.

Drawing on evidence presented and facts established in ICTY and Mechanism cases, Mr. Stjepanović discussed the genocide in Srebrenica and crimes committed in Sarajevo and other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as crimes committed elsewhere in the region of the former Yugoslavia.

The students were also introduced to the work of the MIP and the different ways in which it makes the judicial legacy of the ICTY and the Mechanism more accessible to affected communities and younger generations. Mr. Stjepanović presented examples of the MIP’s videos and online exhibitions and demonstrated how materials from the Mechanism’s Unified Court Records can be used to learn more about individual cases and the evidence presented before the courts.

The lecture provided an opportunity for students to engage directly with the judicially established facts and to learn more about the resources available for studying the conflicts of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.

Through activities such as this lecture, the MIP continues to cooperate with universities and other educational institutions to promote greater knowledge and understanding of the crimes adjudicated by the ICTY and the Mechanism and their judicial legacy.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) was established by UN Security Council Resolution 1966 (2010) to complete the remaining work of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia after the completion of their respective mandates. The Mechanism has two branches, one in Arusha, Tanzania, and one in The Hague, Netherlands.
