Mechanism President attends Opening Ceremony of Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in Zanzibar

Yesterday, the President of the Mechanism, Judge Graciela Gatti Santana, attended the Opening Ceremony of the biennial Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM), which is being hosted by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania (Tanzania) in Zanzibar.

The CLMM, which will take place from 4 to 8 March 2024, was inaugurated by the Tanzanian President, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, and will be chaired by the Hon. Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, Minister of Constitutional and Legal Affairs of Tanzania. President Samia underscored Tanzania’s commitment to ensuring universal access to justice, highlighting ongoing efforts in this domain. In addition, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, the Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland KC, delivered opening remarks, emphasising the significance of the agenda items slated for discussion during the event.

The theme of the 2024 CLMM is ‘Technology and Innovation: How digitalisation paves the way for the development of people-centred access to justice’. Law ministers and attorneys-general from across the Commonwealth will discuss a wide range of issues, including digital assets, electronic resources for efficient legal systems, the protection of women and girls, and strengthened access to justice for people with disabilities. The CLMM will also contribute to advancing targets for United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 on ensuring equal access to justice for all.
