United Nations Detention Facility (UNDF)

UNDF

The UNDF was established in 1996 under the jurisdiction of the ICTR.  In fact, the UNDF was purpose-built, within the compound of the Tanzanian correctional centre in Arusha.  This was the first time that a United Nations body established and managed a dedicated detention facility.

On 31 December 2015, following the closure of the ICTR, the Mechanism took over complete responsibility for the functioning of the UNDF.  There are currently six persons detained in the UNDF, consisting of:

  • one convicted person awaiting transfer to an Enforcement State; and,
  • five accused persons in a contempt case.
