MIP held lectures at the International Summer School in Sarajevo

On 28 July 2025, a representative of the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP) delivered presentations at the 19th International Summer School Sarajevo 2025. This year, the Summer School gathered 26 participants from 23 countries, including students and young professionals from across the former Yugoslavia. Among the lecturers were former and current prosecutors and judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), and the International Criminal Court (ICC), as well as other experts in international law.
Organized by the Association “Pravnik” and the Rule of Law Programme SouthEast Europe of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the event is fully accredited by the University of Sarajevo. The event takes place at the Sarajevo Information Centre on the ICTY, situated in the Sarajevo City Hall.
This year’s MIP presentation, delivered by Mr. Nemanja Stjepanović, MIP Researcher, was structured in three parts.
During the first session, Mr. Stjepanović focused on deepening participants’ understanding of the legacy of the ICTY and the ongoing work of the Mechanism, while also addressing the importance of international criminal justice in promoting reconciliation in the Western Balkans.
The second lecture was dedicated to the genocide in Srebrenica, in light of the 30th anniversary of the events of July 1995. Mr. Stjepanović presented a framework grounded in judicially established facts to support understanding of the genocide, and guided participants through the online exhibition produced by the MIP — Srebrenica: Timeline of a Genocide.
The third and final session featured the screening of the documentary Through Their Eyes: Witnesses to Justice, wich was originally produced by the ICTY Outreach Programme. The film highlights the experiences and courage of witnesses who testified before the Tribunal and their essential role in the pursuit of justice. The screening was followed by a discussion with Mr. Stjepanović, during which participants reflected on the human dimension of international justice and the lasting impact of witness testimonies.
Participation in the 19th International Summer School Sarajevo forms part of the MIP's ongoing efforts to support projects and events implemented by civil society organizations active in the field of transitional justice in the former Yugoslavia.
The aim of the MIP is to improve the knowledge and understanding of citizens and communities in the countries of the former Yugoslavia about the crimes committed during the conflicts of the 1990s, based on ICTY and Mechanism cases.
The MIP is funded by the European Union.
