Remember Sarajevo Victims

For three and a half years Sarajevo was a city under siege. Its citizens were targeted by snipers and shells and lived their lives under constant threat. IRMCT keeps the memory of the victims of the Sarajevo siege alive and honours the survivors who testified before the ICTY.

On 5 February 1994, a mortar shell fired by the Army of Republika Srpska exploded in the busy Markale market in Sarajevo, killing at least 67 people and injuring over 140. This was one of the deadliest crimes committed during the siege of Sarajevo.

During the 42-month-long siege, the Markale market was shelled twice, causing numerous civilian casualties.
