Introduction

This section provides an overview of the cases before the ICTY and the Mechanism concerning the crimes committed in Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina from April 1992 until August 1992. It also contains a selection of archival material and the videos produced by the Mechanism Information Programme for Affected Communities (MIP).

Nineteen people have been convicted before the ICTY and the Mechanism for the crimes committed in Prijedor:

One case was that was originally tried before the ICTY was transferred to Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mejakić et al.)

Remember Prijedor Crimes

The town of Prijedor, in north-western Bosnia and Herzegovina, was the site of some of the most horrific crimes committed during the 1990s conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. These crimes were brought to light during proceedings before the ICTY and the Mechanism. The Judges were able to establish facts about the events in Prijedor as a result of survivors and other witnesses coming forward and giving evidence. In addition, they relied on the statements made by a number of accused persons, who pleaded guilty to charges in their indictments and spoke about their role in the crimes. The IRMCT pays tribute to the victims of the crimes committed in Prijedor.

Remember Prijedor Victims

After establishing control over the city of Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the end of May 1992, the Bosnian Serb authorities ordered the Muslim and Croatian populations to wear white armbands while moving through the city for identification purposes and to hang white sheets on their houses as a sign of loyalty to the new authorities. In the following months, a systematic campaign of crimes against non-Serb civilians ensued, and the camps Omarska, Keraterm, and Trnopolje became symbols of suffering during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. #IRMCT remembers the crimes in Prijedor and honours all those who suffered or were killed in that city during the war.
