The Hague International Open Day

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) will open its doors to the public on Sunday, 23 September 2018, as part of The Hague International Open Day. The event will take place from 11:00 to 17:00 at the Mechanism’s premises, at Churchillplein 1, in The Hague.

Following welcoming remarks by Judge Burton Hall, visitors will have an opportunity to learn about the roles of the Mechanism’s Registry from the Registrar Olufemi Elias, and the Mechanism’s Chambers, from Judge Hall. Visitors will also be able to hear first-hand about different aspects of the Mechanism’s work from various presentations scheduled to take place throughout the day and to view an exhibition on the archives of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Also included in the Open Day programme are guided courtroom tours.

In addition, visitors will have the unique opportunity to watch the premiere screening of a documentary entitled “Srebrenica Genocide: No Room for Denial”, which will provide insights into the investigation, prosecution and adjudication by the ICTY of genocide and other crimes committed in Srebrenica in 1995.

The Hague International Open Day, organized by the municipality of The Hague, is an annual event which aims to provide the general public with an opportunity to learn about the work and functions of various international organizations based in The Hague.

The Mechanism was established in 2010 as the successor organization of the ICTR and the ICTY. Following the closure of the ICTR in 2015 and the closure of the ICTY in December last year, the Mechanism continues their remaining residual work and carries forward the legacies of these two pioneering ad hoc Tribunals.
